The Saint-Emilion wine growing area
Saint-Emilion, a famous medieval town founded in the 8th century around the grotto of the hermit Emilian, is located 40 kilometres northeast of Bordeaux and 8 kilometres from Libourne. With about 5400 hectares (13,500 acres) of vineyard, Saint-Emilion produces about 6% of the total production of red appellation wines in the Bordeaux area.
The wines of Saint-Emilion fall into two appellations : Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. In this latter appellation there is a classification made up of Grand Cru Classé and Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is reviewed every 10 years.
Among classified growths, some of the owners of Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés decided to unite forces in order to jointly promote both their own wines and those of the region.
The Association is wholly representative of the various zones in which Grands Crus Classés are planted, thus encompassing all the wealth and complexity of the Saint-Emilion area : southern slopes, plateau, northern slopes and gravely areas.
Together, these properties make up a surface of about 530 hectares or 90% of the total surface area of the Grands Crus Classés.
In a place of honor in the main square of Château de Versailles stands the equestrian statue of Louis XIV whose laudatory words can be remembered :
“Saint-Émilion, nectar des Dieux”
“Saint Emilion, Nectar of the Gods”
Versailles, timeless elegance that never fades.
Louis XIV’s influence transcends boundaries in a subtle combination of strength and refinement without compromise.
His horse, a swift, slender, and noble animal.
A strong symbol for our Saint Emilion wines.
A nectar of the Gods ? Without doubt because of this additional soul he provides, through this association of bliss and paradise.
Our wines are created for you, each vintage a new adventure to share.
A vivid crimson colour, a palette of subtle aromas, harmony, full body, and a well-balanced elegant mellowness, are the main features of Saint-Emilion wines. Each wine from properties belonging to the Association of Grands Crus Classés has its own nuance and character. All that now remains is for you to discover them.
